KUSF Launches First-Ever National Korfball and Ultimate Frisbee Open Tournaments at Daystar University
The Kenya University Sports Federation (KUSF) is set to make history with the introduction of two dynamic sports—Korfball and Ultimate Frisbee—during the upcoming 5th KUSF Netball & Handball Championship, scheduled for 17th to 19th October 2025 at Daystar University, Nairobi. This marks the first time these globally recognized, fast-growing sports will be featured in KUSF’s official calendar, signaling a bold step toward diversification and inclusion in university athletics.
Korfball, a mixed-gender sport that emphasizes cooperation, strategy, and gender equity, will offer student-athletes a fresh competitive platform that challenges traditional norms. Ultimate Frisbee, known for its speed, agility, and emphasis on fair play, brings a unique blend of athleticism and community spirit to the tournament. Both sports are open to all KUSF member institutions, with no prior qualification required—making this a truly inclusive and exploratory opportunity for universities across Kenya.
For students like Ahmey Sharif of Kenyatta University, this moment is deeply personal.
“I still remember the first time I played Ultimate Frisbee. It was with Coolwaters FC during the Crying Stone Tournament in Kakamega. That day felt special — the energy, the teamwork, and the spirit of the game made me realize how powerful and exciting this sport really is. Our team was good, we played with joy, and above all, we felt like a family.”
Ahmey’s story reflects the heart of Ultimate Frisbee—a sport built on values of teamwork, respect, and fairness. As he puts it,
“This milestone is not just about introducing a new sport; it’s about creating a space where students, young athletes, and communities can come together to grow… This is our moment. This is Kenya’s Ultimate moment.”
The 5th edition of the Netball & Handball Championship remains the anchor event, drawing top-tier teams from across the country. However, the addition of Korfball and Ultimate Frisbee reflects KUSF’s commitment to evolving with global sports trends while remaining rooted in its mission to empower youth through sport. By expanding the scope of competition, KUSF aims to engage a broader spectrum of students, foster innovation, and promote gender-balanced participation.
KUSF Secretary General Ms. Joan Adalo expressed his excitement about the new additions, stating,
“This expansion reflects our vision to make university sports more inclusive, creative, and representative of the diverse interests of our students. We invite all member institutions to embrace the spirit of exploration and competition.”
Participating universities are encouraged to register their teams early and prepare for technical briefings and logistical coordination. The event will feature not only competitive matches but also networking opportunities, leadership forums, and exhibitions that showcase the vibrancy of university sports culture.
As KUSF continues to build its reputation across Africa, the launch of these open tournaments could pave the way for future continental showcases in Korfball and Ultimate Frisbee. The federation remains committed to nurturing talent, fostering unity, and creating platforms where students can thrive both on and off the field.
This October, Daystar University will be the stage where tradition meets transformation. Whether you’re a seasoned athlete or a curious newcomer, the message is clear: It’s time to play, innovate, and represent.
