Her Journey as a FISU Student Ambassador: A Story of Growth, Leadership, and Impact
Diana Barasa is a final-year student at Kenyatta University, pursuing a Bachelor of Special Needs Education with a major in Hearing Impairments. A former football player and Sports Congressperson at Kenyatta University, Diana also serves as the Vice Chairperson of the student committee at the Federation of African University Sports (FASU) and proudly holds the title of FISU Student Ambassador.
The FISU Student Ambassadors program is designed to nurture student leaders between the ages of 18-25. Each year, the National University Sports Federation nominates two students to the program in April. These nominated students attend the FISU Volunteer Leaders Academy (FVLA), which includes an introductory session in June and a main session in September. The FVLA is a unique educational event that equips emerging leaders with knowledge of international university sports and volunteer management, which they can apply in their respective national or continental university sports federations.
Following their participation in the Academy, delegates are appointed as FISU Student Ambassadors and are responsible for creating individual action plans. These plans aim to deliver relevant activities in collaboration with the National University Sports Federation (NUSF) or Continental University Sports Federation (CUSF) to support the growth of university sports in their country or continent.
Throughout her journey with FISU, Diana has had the privilege of being part of a vibrant community of student leaders, athletes, and volunteers who share a passion for sports and education. As an ambassador, she has worked with people from diverse backgrounds, contributed to global events, and led initiatives that promote the values of FISU, FASU, FEAUS, and KUSF.
Achievements: Creating Impact from the Ground Up
One of Diana’s proudest achievements as a FISU Student Ambassador was the creation of the Kenya University Sports Federation (KUSF) Instagram account. This platform allowed her to engage students across Kenya, sharing exciting updates and emphasizing the important role of student-athletes in promoting sport and education. It provided a space to connect with a broader community and amplify a message of empowerment.
Another significant milestone was her participation in the FISU World Forum in Zagreb, Croatia, where global thought leaders, student-athletes, and experts gathered to discuss the intersection of sport and education. This forum provided Diana with invaluable insights and the opportunity to learn from the world’s leading professionals while also contributing her perspective as a student leader. The theme of the event was “University Sport, Creating a Better World,” with subthemes including sports diplomacy, global relations, diversity, and inclusion. Diana was selected as a group leader for a student project during the forum, an experience that helped her further develop her leadership skills and collaborate with peers from around the world.
Learning and Growth: The Power of Diverse Perspectives.
The experiences Diana gained throughout her journey have been invaluable. At the FISU World Forum, she attended numerous sessions led by renowned speakers who shared insights into sports, education, and leadership. This knowledge broadened her understanding of the profound impact of student sport on society.
Leading a diverse group of students was another key learning experience. Guiding a team with varied cultural and professional backgrounds taught Diana the importance of adaptability, communication, and empathy. Although challenging at times, these experiences made her a more effective leader and collaborator.
Following the forum, Diana spoke at the student leaders’ boot camp at Taita Taveta University. As a speaker, she shared her experiences and leadership strategies while encouraging others to embrace leadership roles. The exchange of ideas during the boot camp reinforced her belief in the power of collective action.
Continued Engagement: Strengthening the Student Sports Community.
After the FISU World Forum, Diana continued her engagement with KUSF by being elected as the Female student representative during the Elective General Meeting at Kabarak University. In this role, she has remained active within the KUSF community, promoting student sport and leadership within Kenya. She has supported various initiatives and kept students informed about ongoing opportunities in the sports industry. Thanks to Jack Iganga, the Male Student Representative for working together for a common goal.
One of her most exciting future projects is the establishment of the National FISU Volunteer Leaders Academy. The academy aims to train volunteers who are passionate about contributing to national and global student sports events. It will serve as a platform to develop future leaders while strengthening the FISU student ambassadors’ network. The academy will play a crucial role in equipping students with the skills needed to succeed in their roles and prepare them for leadership positions within their communities and on the international stage.
Conclusion: A Journey of Impact and Future Potential
Looking back on her time as a FISU Student Ambassador, Diana feels immense gratitude for the experiences, people, and lessons that have shaped her into a stronger leader, better communicator, and more passionate advocate for student sport. As she continues to build on this foundation, she is excited about the future, knowing that the opportunities ahead are vast and filled with potential.
Diana expresses heartfelt appreciation to her coach, Carolyne Achieng Ajowi, for her guidance and support, for laying this strong foundation for her, as well as to the former KUSF Secretary General, Joseph Sandagi Kidake, mentor Sara Rozman, and FISU Student Ambassadors project coordinator Albina Rakhmatullina for their belief in her. She also extends her gratitude to everyone who has supported her journey in sports.
Diana encourages any student passionate about sports, leadership, and making a global impact to consider joining the sports community. “Together, we can continue to inspire positive change and empower the next generation of student leaders—today’s leaders, tomorrow’s stars.”
