KUSA was officially established in 1979 with the aim of fostering a conducive environment for university students to participate in sports and physical activities. It sought to create opportunities for students to engage in various sports disciplines and promote physical fitness.
Objectives
KUSA aimed to act as the National Authority for the promotion, conduct, and support of university sports in Kenya. It worked towards integrating sports into university life and encouraging widespread participation among students.
Membership and Participation
Membership: KUSA included over 15 universities within its ranks. National University Championships: Each year, KUSA organized the National University Championships, where more than 1,000 students took part in various sports events. This provided a platform for showcasing athletic talent and fostering competition among universities.
Affiliations and Partnerships
KUSA established affiliations with notable organizations such as the National Olympic Committee-Kenya (NOC-K), the Kenya National Sports Council (KNSC), the Eastern Africa University Sports Federation, the Federation of African University Sports (FASU), and the Federation Internationale du Sport Universitaire – International University Sports Federation (FISU). These partnerships helped align KUSA’s activities with international standards and provided students with broader exposure.
Rebranding and Registration (2024)
In 2024, the Kenya Universities Sports Association (KUSA) underwent a significant transformation, rebranding itself to become the Kenya University Sports Federation (KUSF). This change was driven by the need to better reflect the organization’s evolving objectives and broaden its scope to further enhance the development of university sports in Kenya.
First Election and Leadership
The first election for KUSF was a pivotal moment in its history. Held on November 21, 2024, at Kabarak University Nakuru Town Campus, it marked the beginning of a new era in university sports governance. During this election, Kibet Rono was elected as the President of KUSF, and Joan Adalo was elected as the Secretary General, both serving a four-year term.
